In the past asbestos has been an incredibly popular building material. It was used commonly on sites and projects up until 1999 when its use was banned in the UK. Despite this, hazardous fibres can still be found on a variety of sites across the UK. Here at Ledbury Surveys Ltd we work across the Stroud area carrying out asbestos surveys and removals.

Associated Health Risks
Exposure to fibres can cause serious health issues. Around 5000 workers die a year in the UK from asbestos, which is more than those on the roads. Even though it isn’t used anymore in construction or building trades, the substance can still be found in any property or extensions constructed prior to 2000.
There are several serious and fatal diseases which can be caused by exposure. Symptoms will not show immediately but instead over years and decades. Being around the fibres for a long time can trigger health conditions including lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, and pleural thickening. Some trades are more likely than others to experience these conditions, including builders, miners, electricians and painters.
One of the most common associated risks is asbestosis. This is a serious condition which impacts on the lungs, causing scarring. Some of the most common symptoms to be aware of are:
- Chest or Shoulder Pain
- Shortness of Breath
- Swollen Fingertips (advanced symptom)
- Persistent Cough
Importance of Asbestos Removal
If you do suspect the presence of the fibres, it is important to seek advice and guidance. Having this safely and efficiently removed should be high up on your priorities list. Only trained professionals should work around the substance to make sure that those in the surrounding area are safe.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012 sets out responsibilities and it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with this. If you would like more details, please feel free to visit our information about the current legislation and regulations in the UK.
