What are Asbestos Demolition and Refurbishment Surveys?

These surveys are necessary on any site that is in need of demolition, refurbishment or upgrade work under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Construction, Design & Management Regulations 2007. This is to make sure that no ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials) are present and, if they are, that they are removed safely and carefully prior to any work starting.

It is important that a professional surveyor is used to complete asbestos demolition surveys. They will ensure that any removal work is done by an appropriate contractor and also that nobody working on the site comes to any harm. It is important that the surveyor has access to all materials necessary including building specifications and plans, site layouts as well as architect drawings.

Additionally, a 14 day notification period as well as formal notification of works must be completed before removal takes place.

Find out more about Refurbishment/Demolition Surveys on the Health and Safety Executive website.

Impacts of Exposure

Being exposed to ACMs can cause a serious impact on health. Around 4,000 to 5,000 deaths are caused each year due to inhalation of harmful fibres. The use of this material was only stopped in the late 1990s which is why it is extremely common for it to still be found in properties around the UK.

There are several different health conditions which can be caused by the substance, including:

  • Lung Cancer
  • Pleural Thickening
  • Mesothelioma
  • Asbestosis

We have been working with the material for more than 20 years in both the civil engineering and construction industry. Our team understand the dangers associated with asbestos and are committed to health and safety at all times.
