About Our Surveys

Before any work can be carried out on a site due to be demolished or refurbished, a survey needs to be carried out. A surveyor will attend your site to identify and locate any ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials) that may be present. This is to ensure that all those working in and around the location are safe from potentially harmful fibres. Once found, removal will be arranged and carried out by a reputable team like ourselves.

Asbestos demolition surveys are required under law and are outlined by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Construction, Design & Management Regulations 2007. Before any removal work is carried out, there has to be a 14 day notification period as well as formal notification.

Visit the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) website for more details about refurbishment/demolition surveys and your responsibilities.

Why Is It Dangerous?

As a popular building material until the late 1990s, asbestos is incredibly common to find in properties around the UK. There are 6 different microscopic fibres which are classed as the substance including Amphibole and Serpentine. It is a Class 1 human carcinogen and is incredibly dangerous when inhaled. Today it is still responsible for up to 5,000 worker deaths in the UK each year. Several conditions can be caused as a result of inhalation, including:

  • Pleural Thickening
  • Asbestosis
  • Lung Cancer
  • Mesothelioma

It’s only when ACMs are disturbed or destroyed that this causes a danger. Most of the time, buildings which contain it do not pose a risk unless fibres are released into the atmosphere. This is why asbestos demolition surveys are necessary as it can prevent harm to those on and around site.
