What is Asbestos?

It is a Class 1 human carcinogen which is responsible for around 4,000 to 5,000 deaths in the UK each year. There are 6 naturally occurring silicates which are considered to be asbestos and all of these are microscopic fibres. This means it is incredibly easy for anybody working around these fibres to breath them in, resulting in several health conditions.

Some of these include:

  • Pleural Thickening
  • Lung Cancer
  • Mesothelioma
  • Asbestosis

Those working in certain industries are more likely to be at risk including builders, electricians, plumbers, painters and carpenters. It is important that any suspected asbestos is dealt with by a professional only to make sure that all health and safety guidance is followed.

Importance of Surveys

Under law any demolition, upgrade or refurbishment work on sites cannot be carried out before a refurbishment/demolition survey has taken place. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Construction, Design & Management Regulations 2007 outline this to ensure that anybody on site is safe at all times. The survey aims to find and locate and ACMs and then arrange for them to be removed as safely as possible before any building work is completed. These are always thorough and destructive to ensure that any harmful materials are found.

Before anything can be removed, a formal notification of work and 14 day notification period needs to take place. Once complete, a surveyor will work with you to ensure that any ACMs present on site are removed.
