Where To Find It

Even though it isn’t used anymore, you can still find dangerous fibres within several homes and buildings across the Bromsgrove area. Carrying out work on a building can often bring dangers to the surface, which is why asbestos surveys are worthwhile. This will help to identify any issues and suggest ways to manage these situations.

In both industrial and residential buildings, the fibres can be found in a number of locations including:

  • Sprayed Coatings
  • Insulation
  • Cement
  • Floor Tiles
  • Walls
  • Textiles (fire blankets etc)
  • Pipe Lagging
  • Toilet Cisterns and Seats
  • Gutters and Soffits
  • Roofing Felt

The Health and Safety Executive have further guidance on where you can find asbestos. However, if you do suspect it, you should never touch or begin any work without advice from a professional. The fibres are extremely dangerous when they are airborne.

Different Types and Fibres

In total, 50 countries around the world have banned the use of asbestos. Despite this, it is still used in some countries including Russia, China, and India. The substance is made from 6 natural minerals which are in two groups, amphibole and serpentine. Below are some details about the three key fibres that are found on sites.

Chrysotile (White)

As the most commonly used type, this fibre is fine, highly flexible and resistant to heat.

Amosite (Brown)

This is also heat resistant and strong and appears mostly in cement, plumbing and electrical installations. It is thought that exposure to this fibre results in a higher risk of cancer.

Crocidolite (Blue)

With thin fibres, crocidolite is one of the more harmful types. This is because it breaks easily, leaving it to enter the air.

The other 3 forms of asbestos include tremolite, anthophyllite and actinolite.
